The time has arrived to tantalize your taste buds at
the Historic Deadwood-Lead Arts Council’s 13th
Annual Cheesecake Sampler!
Friday, October 7th from 6 to 8 p.m. is the date & time, and you are invited to participate with a contribution of a delicious homemade cheesecake. There will be a professional and an amateur division with no limit to the number of entries you may submit. This flavorful event will take place at the Deadwood Social Club in the Charley Utter Theatre. Guests will vote for their favorite dessert and awards will be given to the winner in each class. Everyone is invited to try out his or her most decadent recipes on many “more than willing” guests. In addition to the cheesecakes, the evening will also include the auction of twenty mailboxes created for HDLAC’s Van Gogh’s Mailbox community art project. The Hill’s most popular auctioneer, Jerry Croft of Croft Auction Service, will be onhand to seek out that high bid. Remember, the proceeds from this event helps the Historic Deadwood-Lead Arts Council continue its educational and cultural programming in our community. Registration forms to enter the cheesecake competition are available at the Arts Council. If you should have any questions, please feel free to give the Arts Council a call at 584-1461. We look forward to seeing your cheesecake entry! The photo above is from last year's Cheesecake Sampler and shows Linda Maxwell receiving her awards for Chef D'oeuvre' and the Peoples Choice. Other champions from 2004 were Mike Chaput of Deadwood Thymes - professional division, and December White - amateur division. |

HDLAC's first quilt exhibit was an overwhelming
success and one of the most
popular exhibits this year. Over 250 people attended
the
open house on Sunday, September 11 and a steady
flow of visitors have been in ever since.
Approximately 80 quilts will be on display at HDLAC
until mid October.
Special thanks to Jim O'Grady and the Historic Homestake Opera House for sponsoring the great entertainment, Eric Johnson & the Peculiars, immediately after the open house. The exhibit also coincided with "The Great Black Hills Quilt Escape" held at Terry Peak with over 70 quilters participating. Lead resident, Betty Dahlin, and her daughter, Valerie Begeman, have organized the event for 10 years. Plans are already underway for next year's exhibit. The photo above shows everyone having a great time at the open house. |

Last Christmas the Historic Deadwood-Lead Arts
Council sponsored the return of the Gold Camp
Players with the timeless classic "A Christmas Carol."
The show was held at the Deadwood Pavilion and
over 500 people attended.
HDLAC is ready to try its luck again this Christmas by
sponsoring, "The Christmas Suite, A Cantata for
Christmas." A cantata is a composition of vocals,
recitals, instrumentals, solos, etc. Deadwood
resident, Shirlene Joseph, will be directing the show
and encourages residents of all ages to participate
(8-years old minimum).
Rehearsals will be held on Mondays beginning November 7th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with daily rehearsals the week before the performances, and due to the short rehearsal schedule, attendance will be mandatory. The show will be held on December 9, 10 & 11 at the Deadwood Pavilion with the times to be announced. Shirlene has also requested that choir members share their "holiday" poetry throughout the performance. A beautiful voice is great, but the heart and soul of the choir will be made up of those of us with average voices. The show is about the joy of singing, holiday spirit and community. If you would like to participate, please give the Arts Council a call at 584-1461. |

sponsored the Jack Sprat Low Fat World Tour for the
Lead-Deadwood elementary students. The musical

at the Historic
Homestake Opera House where the students also
learned about the ongoing restoration of the theater.
Other sponsors for the show include the SD Arts
Council, Deadwood Elks
Club
and Homestake Visitors Center. The students had a
great time watching the performance and Opera
House officials were thrilled to see the theatre come
to life with the excitement and enthusiasm from area

Several years ago a gentleman by the name of John
Davis visited Deadwood and danced with a classy
lady named Josie Arsaga. He never forgot his
beautiful dance partner that evening and no doubt
everyone who danced with her or
just watched her dance remembers her as well. Josie
stood 4'1" and every weekend dressed in her finest
attire (handmade as she was so small nothing fit)
and danced the night away in Deadwood.
Josie passed away about five years ago and John, along with many other people, believe that Josie was a legend in Deadwood and her life should be remembered. John would like to pay special tribute to Josie with a bronze statue. The statue will cost approximately $17,000 dollars and Deadwood artist, David Young, has already begun working on the memorial at the Wild West Winners Club. John is raising money for the cause and if you would like to make a contribution to the fund, an account has been established at the First Western Bank in Deadwood. HDLAC would like to wish John good luck with his very worthwhile project. The photo above shows David Young working on the life size statue of Deadwood's "Josie." |

The Blue Dog Gallery in Lead recently hosted its
second annual "Plein Air Paint Out." Twenty-six
artists participated which is up 10 from last year.
John, Jan and Ben Humphrey, owners of
Blue Dog Gallery and Studio, considered the event a
huge success and are already looking forward to next
year's "Paint Out."
The photo below shows a participant enjoying a beautiful fall day in the Hills at the second annual "Plein Air Paint Out." |

The Plein Air Paint Out is another example of how
economic development is served through the arts.
Approximately one hundred people visited Lead Main
Street and the Blue Dog Gallery and Studio
during the Paint Out. That Saturday evening
Deadwood Thymes
Bistro provided a wonderful dinner for participants.
Remember, when we support the arts, we support a
stronger economic base for our community.
